About the Project

For more than 125 years, Ukrainians in Canada have been preserving their national and cultural identity, producing and storing a large number of books, periodicals and non-periodical publications. At the same time, the history of Ukrainians in British Columbia is a story of many different political and cultural organizations. Some of them still exist, others have melted away, but they all are part of the same process. This information remains unknown not only to the public but also to academics. There is no common archive for the Ukrainian community in BC, each organization preserving materials (in a variety of formats and media, such as, paper, sound recordings and photographic images) separately, and without a system.

"Spadok" is a project of the Ukrainian Vancouver Media Society. The main goal of the project is to process records of Ukrainian British Columbia organizations and provide public access to archive information that documents the history of the social, cultural, educational and political life of the Ukrainian community in BC. 

A large part of all the information collected by the project is taken from the archives of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in British Columbia. It is a collection of artifacts and information pertaining to the history of Ukrainians in the region. The digitization of the Ukrainian archives is underway and the number of digitized files will grow.

Вже понад 125 років, українці у Канаді борються за збереження національної і культурної самобутності, за цей час побачили світ численні книги, періодичні та неперіодичні видання різного роду. Вони доступні  Але історія українців Британської Колумбії це також історія різних політичних і культурних організацій. Деякі з них до цих пір існують, інші вже зникли, але всі вони є частиною одного і того ж процесу. Цей великий шар інформації залишається невідомим не тільки громадськості, а й в академічних колах. Українська спільнота Британської Колумбії не має єдиного архіву, кожна організація зберігає матеріали (у різних форматах і на різних носіях: папері, плівках, у вигляді світлин, тощо) окремо, і без системи. 

"Спадок" це архівний проект Ukrainian Vancouver Media Society спрямований на опрацювання документів українських організацій Британської Колумбії і забезпечення доступу громадськості до архівної інформації, що документує історію соціального, культурного, освітнього та політичного життя українського суспільства у регіоні та Канаді загалом.

Велика частина інформації, зібраної в рамках проекту походить з архівів відділення Конгресу Українців Канади у Британській Колумбії (КУК БК ). Це велика структурована колекція артефактів і інформації, що відносяться до історії українців в регіоні. Оцифровка українських архівів триває, і кількість оцифрованих файлів збільшуватиметься надалі.
